Ways to Handle Hidden Thoughts Affecting Your Money Choices

Being good with money is not just about knowing things; it’s about how you feel and think about it. Sometimes, our feelings can make us do things with our money that don’t really make sense. Dr. Alex Melkumian says that to change our money habits, we first need to understand them.

Dr. Bradley Klontz calls these hidden feelings about money “money scripts.” Natasha Knox says these are like rules in our head about how money works. They come from things we learned when we were kids. But everyone feels differently, even kids in the same family.

Here are those “money scripts”:

  1. Money Avoidance: People who think this way feel bad about money. They think that having a lot of money is wrong or that rich people are not nice. Because of this, they might not take good care of their money. Klontz says that to feel better, these people should try to see that not all rich people are bad. They can also find rich people who do good things with their money and learn from them.
  1. Money Worship: People with this belief think that money can fix everything. They believe that if they have money, they’ll be happy. The problem is that just buying things doesn’t always make you happy for long. Klontz says that instead of buying things all the time, people should think about what really makes them happy. It might be spending time with family or doing a hobby, not just buying stuff.
